Entertainment Media Publishing and Distribution Mastery Journal
This month's class was one that I was excited about and has brought additional insight into self publishing. I expected to dive into the various elements of publishing and distribution and the class has delivered on these topics.
The breakdown of the importance of the relationship and need for an agent is an important one in today's world. It has gotten so easy to reach out directly to anybody for just about anything. The review of the query letter is something that I definitely plan to use to establish new business relationships. It sets the right tone and is the most professional way to ask permission to send unsolicited material. I think the old fashion letter elevates the respect the sender has for its receiver and agree it also warrants a higher level of consideration.
The topic of a well written press kit is one that also shouldn't be ignored as they can go a long way in furthering an established rapport with its reader. The press kit should not be confused with a website. While websites are important, the critical elements that are put on display in a good press kit differ substantially. Whether it be booking gigs, generating press, or attracting a manager or agent, the press kit is essentially the resume of your professional experience as an artist. It should be established as soon as possible and updated as often as necessary to stay current. Every artist needs this tool.
The discussion as it relates to POD’s or aggregators, was also insightful. While the selection of POD’s varied, the importance of these tools couldnt be ignored. Technology has made the distribution of content much easier and accessible like never before. Understanding the benefit of establishing a relationship with a POD can not only make your life easier but elevate you reach to each corner of the globe.
This month's lessons touched on a number of really key critical elements that oftentimes get overlooked in the entertainment industry. As an artist manager and business owner, I have used the tools mentioned and they will certainly be tools that I deploy when needed in my future endeavors. Looking forward to week 4!
